Chaplynka district

The district is located in the central southern part of Kherson region. It is bounded by Nyzhni Sirohozy district in the north, by Ivanivka and Heniches’k districts in the east, by Tsyurupyns’k district in the west, by Kalanchak district in the west-south, and is washed by waters of the salt Syvash Sea in the South.
The district is characterized by some peculiarities. The burial hills of the Bronze Age are declarative of this. The antique works of the IV - II centuries B. C. were found in the territory of the district.
Chaplynka was founded in 1794 on the road, by which the Ukrainian Tchoomaks (ox-cart drivers) went to the Crimea with the aim to buy salt. It was established by 25 families of villagers, deported by the Czar's government to the Tavria steppes because of their participation in the well-known Turbayivs’ke rebellion in 1789-1793 in Poltava region. It was them, who reclaimed this territory.

Nowadays the district deals with agriculture chiefly. Stable yields are provided by irrigation, which is supplied by a ramified network of the Kakhovka Irrigation System. Plant-growing and cattlebreeding sectors constitute an economic basis of the district.
The Ivanov Research Institute for Cattle-Breeding in Steppe Regions of Ukraine, located in the district's territory, favors development of its economy. It is here, where new breeds of sheep, pigs and cattle are approved.
The Joint Ukrainian-German Breeding Enterprise «Askania-Genetic» with participation of the German company «RPN-Genetic International GmbH», which is one of the leading firms, dealing with breeding services, was founded on the basis of the former research farm of the Institute in 1994.

The largest in Europe biosphere reserve «Askania-Nova» with its Stipa and Festuca Steppe is located in the territory of the district. Here over 5 thousand individuals of 110 classes of mammals and birds are kept in the open-air cages and under semifree conditions; there is the largest in the south of Ukraine dendrological garden here as well.
The Joint-Stock Company «Chaplyns’kyi Maslosyrzavod» («Chaplynka Creamery and Cheese-Making Plant») is celebrated for its products. It is included into five best enterprises of Ukraine; it was repeatedly given high awards both in Ukraine and in the Russian Federation.
In Askania-Nova visitors will be surprised to see one more wonder - a wind electric power station, comprising 6 functioning plants, which supply cheap electric energy.
