Hornostaivka district

This district is located in the central-northern part of Kherson region. It is bounded by Velyka Lepetykha district in the north, by Nyzhni Sirohozy and Kakhovka districts in the east and south, by Beryslav district in the west along the Dnipro riverbed.
The district acquired its name form the migrants from Hornostayivka village in Kyiv region. The name Hornostayivka derives from the world «hornostay» (ermine) - an animal, which ranged in Polissya.The district center was founded in the XVIII century.

Remains of the settlement, referring to the later Bronze Age preserved here, as well as a site of the Scythian-Sarmatians' times, stone idols of nomads of the XI - XIII centuries were found in the district. Near the village of Kayiry a Mesolithic encampment, a Neolithic tomb and a burial ground, two settlements and a tomb of the later Bronze Age, a Scythian-Sarmatians' site, a burial ground of the IX - XI centuries were discovered.

From the earliest times, the population of this territory was occupied in agriculture, cattlebreeding, fishing in the Dnipro, mining of limestone in stone-pits. Two large fairs, where people sold wheat and animals were held here annually in the XIX century.
Nowadays an agribusiness defines the economic structure of the district. The district has southern black soils with some varieties and meadow black soils at the steppe lowlands. Natural conditions are advantageous for growing of grain, oil and vegetable crops, production of milk, meat and eggs.
